ReNewIt Today: This Hartland home went from classic to fantastic with cabinet refacing
True to its 1994 construction, Keri Colliton’s Hartland kitchen had a classic ‘90s feel thanks to its honey oak cabinets and black granite countertops. With the honey oak style running throughout her home, Keri and her husband John felt that it was time to break it up and brighten the kitchen space.
The honey oak cabinets in this Hartland home needed a fresh update so the owners reached out to ReNewIt by Kurtis.
“We knew we wanted to do something with our kitchen but weren't really in a position to do a full remodel,” she says.
They talked to a contractor about painting, but ultimately decided it wasn’t ideal for their cabinets. That’s when Keri learned about refacing, which seemed like the right option.
Cabinet refacing is a cost-effective way to give a kitchen or bathroom a fresh, updated look without the expense of a full remodel. It’s especially useful when you want more than a change in color. With cabinet refacing, we remove your cabinet doors and drawer fronts, then replace them with new doors in your preferred style and color. We also replace hinges and moldings, and cover the cabinet boxes with a matching veneer or laminate. Customers typically switch out cabinet knobs and drawer pulls too.
An online search led Keri to ReNewIt by Kurtis for her cabinet refacing project. Coincidentally, her father and step-mother had just chosen Kurtis Kitchen & Bath for a full remodel and were happy with their quote and experience so far, so she was optimistic about what our team could offer her.
By choosing to reface rather than paint, this kitchen got a considerable upgrade in a short time.
From her first meeting Keri was prepared with inspiration from Pinterest. Our team shared color and style options to complement her ideas.
“We didn’t change our countertops, so working with the designer to make sure our colors were going to look OK with that was helpful,” Keri says. “I think the colors we went with really go great with the black countertops.”
They swapped out the honey oak cabinets for sleek, shaker cabinets in an ivory color and opted for an “Anchor Blue” color on their island. They also swapped out gold knobs for brushed nickel bar hardware on the doors.
“I definitely think it brightened up our kitchen a lot, bringing in the light color,” Keri says. “It kind of breaks up that wood color in everything and makes the kitchen its own separate room now. And we’ve gotten tons of compliments on it.”
One benefit of refacing is that it’s cleaner and faster than a full remodel and, Keri notes, their kitchen was only out of commission for about two weeks. That was doable for her family and on target with what ReNewIt initially estimated.
“For the price, knowing that we really didn’t want to jump into a full remodel, but we really needed a change, the reface was a really good alternative. I think if this is what people are pursuing, it’s a great option.”
